The Ndau are historically related to the Karanga, but they have their own language. Ndau comes from a greeting in their language. The Nguni tribe has influenced their language, surnames, and culture. In the 1820s, the Nguni raiders came south and took Ndau women as captive wives. Later there was much intermarriage between the two ethnic groups. Today the Ndau are related to the Shona and Shangaan tribes in southern Africa. They are well-represented in both Mozambique and Zimbabwe.
Like most peoples in southern Africa, the Ndau are agricultural. They grow crops and raise livestock. The Ndau people have to deal with serious theft issues in their part of Africa. They are also known to be very good herbalists, and Mozambicans say they are the most feared black magicians. Historical records describe the Ndau as "humble and non-violent" people, but they are also known for using magic when offended and for fighting injustices.
Islam dominates the Machinga society. Attendance at the mosque is important and great emphasis is placed on training their children at the madrassa. Often the madrassa structure is superior to that of the mosque.PRGRPHA village may be totally Islamic but a majority of the people is only Muslim by birth. These nominal Islamic peoples are fertile soil in which to sow the gospel. However, historically new converts are pressured to return to Islam and Christian workers are driven from their villages. Outsiders in government service or teachers in their schools who are Christians usually practice their faith covertly.
Tanzanian evangelical churches and mission organizations to identify felt needs among the villagers (roof on a primary school, digging a well, etc.) that can be met and in so doing gain favor, acceptance and an open door for ministry.
Pray for the Ndau people to be released from black magic and dark spirits.
May they trust the holy and loving savior, knowing that God is the only one who can protect them and give them peace.
Pray for Ndau disciples to make more disciples, who will make even more disciples.
Pray for them to be drawn to the humility of Jesus.
