Introduction / History

The Lemio are a small people group of Madang Province in Papua New Guinea, in the Rai Coast region along the rugged northern coast. They belong to a remote coastal and foothill setting where communities have long been shaped by steep terrain, forest, and difficult access between villages. Their language is Lemio, a Rai Coast language of the Madang linguistic region.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Lemio live in the Rai Coast environment of Madang Province, where village life is often shaped by narrow coastal strips, steep inland slopes, heavy forest, and limited road access. In this kind of setting, communities commonly depend on small-scale gardening, fishing where coastal access is available, gathering local food resources, and walking between settlements on footpaths rather than relying on regular road transport. Houses are typically simple village homes built from local materials suited to humid tropical conditions. Family and clan relationships are central, and daily life is usually organized around subsistence work, kinship obligations, and village cooperation. Their language in ordinary life is Lemio.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Lemio are identified as Christian, though some traditional ethnic religious influence may remain. Scripture is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Lemio need spiritual depth so that a strong Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and families that live out the gospel clearly. They need protection from nominal Christianity, compromise, and any lingering attachment to older spiritual loyalties. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own community and to serve other ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Lemio would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that any remaining attachment to older spiritual practices would be fully surrendered to the lordship of Christ.
Pray for strong Christian families, healthy churches, and enduring discipleship among the Lemio.
Pray that the Lemio would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful blessing beyond their own community.
