Introduction / History

There are at least six Gawwada subgroups in southern Ethiopia. The Gawwada live in the Omo region around Lake Chamo. The Lower Omo region has remained one of the most inaccessible and least developed parts of East Africa. As a result, Gawwada social organization and values have changed only slightly in the last century. They speak Ale.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Traditionally ruthless warriors, the Gawwada are now agriculturists. Some also keep small herds of cattle, sheep and goats. During the dry season, the Gawwada fish to supplement their diets.

The typical Gawwada dwelling, called a tukal, is a circular hut made of acacia branches covered with grass mats. The cone-shaped roof has an opening to allow smoke to escape. Their staple diet includes durra (a cereal grain), maize, beans, rice, milk, meat and wild fruits. Coffee and tea are popular beverages.

The Gawwada family is headed by an authoritarian father who has the right to total obedience. Men usually have only one wife, and children are considered a necessity. The more children a Gawwada man has, the greater his prestige.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Gawwada have a strong church. They are considered fully reached with the gospel, and they can be used by God to reach others in southern Ethiopia. However, they can fall back into worshipping spirits in times of great need.

What Are Their Needs?

The Gawwada struggle when there is not enough rain. They need clean water and enough wells for their water needs. They also lack adequate medical care.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Gawwada to have their physical needs met by the Lord.
Pray for them to take up their role as Christ’s ambassadors to the less reached peoples in southern Ethiopia’s Gamma Gofa region.
Pray for them to always put Jesus first in their lives, especially in times of trouble.
