The Frisian are a Germanic ethnic group indigenous to coastal areas in what is today the Netherlands and Germany (formerly a province called Frisia). They speak Frisian languages, most commonly West Frisian. The Romans encountered them along the northern Dutch coast, and over time, they came into contact also with the Frankish Kingdom, which was expanding at the time. They were slowly converted to a form of Christianity from the 7th to the 9th centuries. Missionaries like Willibrord, Boniface and Liudger were involved in those efforts. Liudger is considered one of the most successful missionaries, partially because of his engagement with the local culture and language. Later a Frisian convert Bernlef, a former professional poet, evangelized his own people. In the 16th century, the Frisians became Protestant Calvinists and joined the Dutch revolt against Spain.
Frisians today have a double loyalty—to the Netherlands as Dutch citizens, and to their regional identity as well.
Today most Frisians are Protestant Calvinists of Reformed and Dutch Reformed churches. A smaller group are Mennonites. Sometimes these faiths are blended with pre-Christian local folklore (stories of elves, etc.) Since the 20th century, significant efforts have been made to make Christian worship available in the Frisian language, including bilingual services and literature.
Cultural marginalization is a problem for many today, with traditional Dutch culture considered superior and Frisians considered as backward. The group is predominantly rural, but it is losing its youth to the cities, resulting in an aging population in the rural areas and limited local job opportunities. Church attendance is declining due to rapid secularization, resulting in church closures. Faith is often merely nominal or private, Biblical literacy is declining, and younger generations increasingly see Christianity as irrelevant and outdated.
Pray that nominal Christians may come to know Christ personally and deeply.
Pray that the younger generations may be led back into the Christian faith and the church.
Pray that God may raise up strong and faithful Bible teachers amongst the Frisians.
Pray that the church in Frisian may find its place in world mission.
