The Frisians were once a group of tribes originating in the Netherlands and northern Germany. They were mentioned by the Romans as early as 12BC. Their cavalrymen were hired by the Romans in their invasion of Britain. In 296 they were taken as serfs into Roman territory. Much of their population was decimated between the 400s-600s by natural disasters and flooding. They regrouped in the Middle Ages, and even killed a prominent missionary who was baptizing their people. Later they became Christianized, but “missionary” work at that time was often done through coercion.
Today the Frisian language is divided into three parts: Northern, Eastern and Saterland. Those who speak Eastern Frisian still live in Germany.
For the most part, Frisian speakers are integrated with their German neighbors. Some speak Frisian at home, but their cultural identity is not always tied in with being Frisian.
The Frisians are officially Christian, but like others in Europe, they are secularized. Many doubt the validity of the Bible and the foundations of salvation by faith in Christ.
Frisians need to open their eyes and see the glory of the Lord.
Pray for the Eastern Frisians to see Christian believers live out their faith in a way that draws others to the savior.
Pray for disciples to make more disciples in such a way their culture is enhanced.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to do a great work among Frisian speakers this decade.
