Introduction / History

The Duma, also known as the Aduma, are an indigenous Bantu people of central Gabon. They live primarily along the upper Ogooué River, especially around Lastoursville in Ogooué-Lolo Province. Their language, Duma, belongs to the Northwest Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo language family and remains an important expression of their ethnic identity.

The name Duma is commonly understood to mean "men of the river," reflecting their long association with the Ogooué River. Historically, they were renowned as expert canoe builders and boatmen, transporting people and goods along the river long before modern roads connected the region. Oral traditions describe their ancestors as migrating from the east or southeast before settling along the Ogooué, where they became active participants in regional trade.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Duma combine farming, fishing, and river-based livelihoods. Fertile riverbanks support the cultivation of cassava, plantains, bananas, coconuts, mangoes, oranges, watermelons, and other tropical crops. Fishing remains an important source of food, while some families also engage in small-scale trading and forestry-related work. The river continues to influence transportation, commerce, and daily routines.

Family life is centered on extended households, where relatives work together in farming and community activities. Elders are respected for their wisdom and play an important role in preserving oral history and guiding younger generations. Weddings, harvest celebrations, and other communal gatherings are often accompanied by traditional music, dancing, storytelling, and shared meals that reinforce social bonds.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Dumas identify as Christians, particularly within Protestant churches. At the same time, some continue to place their trust in traditional religious beliefs involving ancestral spirits, ritual practices, and spiritual forces believed to influence health, protection, and daily life. These beliefs may exist alongside Christian profession rather than being completely abandoned.

Portions of the Bible are available in the Duma language, including Scripture resources in audio form. However, the complete Bible has not yet been translated into Duma, and there remains a need for deeper biblical discipleship. Scripture teaches that forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God are found through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not through rituals or other spiritual powers.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Duma communities would benefit from improved healthcare, stronger educational opportunities, and sustainable economic development that supports agriculture and river-based livelihoods. Continued literacy efforts and language development would also strengthen the use of Duma among future generations.

Spiritually, the Duma need the complete Bible in their own language, mature biblical teaching, and churches that faithfully disciple believers to trust fully in Jesus Christ and his word.

Prayer Items

Pray that the complete Bible will be translated into the Duma language and widely used.
Pray that Duma believers will grow in biblical maturity and place their trust in Jesus Christ alone.
Pray for improved healthcare, education, and sustainable livelihoods for Duma families.
Pray that God will strengthen local churches and raise up faithful leaders to disciple future generations.
