Introduction / History

Kugbo is an endangered indigenous language of Nigeria. It is a Central Delta language belonging to the Niger-Congo language family. Kugbo is spoken in Abua-Odual LGA (Local Government Area) in Rivers State, Nigeria

What Are Their Lives Like?

Agriculture is the main occupation of the Kugbo people. Rivers State is one of the leading states in the production of yams, cassava, taro, maize, rice and beans. Some people run small businesses and others are employed in civil service.

Like other tribal societies in Nigeria, the Kugbo people pay a bride price to seal the marital rites. They usually have wedding celebrations with food and drink. The husband is considered head of the household and provides for family. The wife cares for the home and supports her husband. They show respect to the extended family.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority of the Kugbo people have accepted Christianity. However, many local denominations are more focused on social justice issues rather than personal salvation through faith in Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

Sufficient data is lacking, but Kugbo is thought to be used as a first language by a decreasing number of young people. It is not known to be taught in schools. Survey work needs to be conducted to assess the multilingualism of the people and in what domains Kugbo, English, Nigerian Pidgin, and neighboring languages are being used. Community leaders, who may be interested in language development to preserve their language, might attend workshops as they become available that expose participants to language vitality and potential short-term development and translation projects.

Prayer Points

Pray Kugbo community and church leaders will seek assistance to assess their language vitality and determine their development and translation needs.
Pray the Kugbo people can access God’s Word in a language they understand clearly so they may grow in their knowledge of God and come to faith in Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
