Afro-Antiguans are the majority ethnic group in Antigua and Barbuda and are primarily descended from West and Central Africans brought to the islands during the era of British colonial slavery. After emancipation in the 19th century, formerly enslaved communities established villages and shaped the social and cultural foundations of modern Antiguan society. English is the national language, and the Antiguan Creole is widely spoken in everyday conversation.
Tourism is the main economic driver, and many Afro-Antiguans work in hospitality, transportation, construction, fishing, small business, and government services. Family life is close-knit, and extended relatives often share responsibility for raising children and supporting one another. Carnival is a major national celebration marked by music, dance, and vibrant public events. Common foods include saltfish, fungi (a cornmeal dish), rice and peas, stewed meats, and fresh seafood.
Christianity is the major religion of this region. Anglican, Methodist, Pentecostal, Roman Catholic, and other Protestant churches are active throughout the country. Church buildings are visible in most communities, and Christian holidays such as Christmas and Easter are nationally observed. Many have a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ while others are nominal.
Economic stability remains closely tied to tourism, making this nation vulnerable to global shifts and natural disasters.
