The Teli are a community traditionally associated with the pressing and selling of oil extracted from seeds such as mustard and sesame. The name "Teli" is derived from a Sanskrit word referring to oil obtained from seeds. In India, members of the Teli community may be Hindu or Muslim. Among Muslims, they are often known as Shaikh Mansuri, a name that has become a preferred self-identification in many areas. Historically, oil production played an important role in local economies, and the Teli became closely connected with this occupation across northern India. Over time, many families moved into trade, agriculture, and other occupations while maintaining a distinct community identity. Their primary language is Hindi, though some may also speak regional languages depending on where they live.
While some Muslim Teli families continue to be involved in activities connected to oil production and trade, many now work in farming, small businesses, transportation, retail, skilled trades, and wage labor. In some areas, families own little or no agricultural land and depend on seasonal employment or daily wages for their livelihood.
Family and community relationships are highly valued. Extended families often maintain close ties, and community networks provide support during marriages, festivals, and times of need. Traditional foods generally reflect the cuisine of northern India, including wheat-based breads, rice, lentils, vegetables, and meat dishes where affordable. Daily life often centers on family responsibilities, work, education for children, and participation in local Muslim community life. As modernization and urbanization continue, younger generations increasingly pursue education, business opportunities, and employment beyond their traditional occupations.
The Muslim Teli follow Islam, primarily within the Sunni tradition. Their understanding of God, prayer, religious identity, and community life is shaped by Islamic teaching and practice. In some areas, elements of folk religion and devotion to local religious figures may exist alongside orthodox Islamic beliefs, reflecting patterns found among various South Asian Muslim communities.
Like many Muslim communities, they are taught that obedience to Islamic teachings is the path to pleasing God. As a result, many have had little opportunity to consider the biblical message that salvation is found through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ alone. Few have encountered a clear presentation of the gospel from a trusted Christian witness.
The Muslim Teli need opportunities to hear and understand the gospel in culturally appropriate ways and through relationships built on trust. Because oil has historically been important to their identity and livelihood, biblical themes involving oil, anointing, and the work of the Holy Spirit may provide meaningful bridges for gospel conversations.
Many families also face practical challenges related to stable employment, education, and economic advancement. Access to quality schooling, vocational opportunities, and community development can improve daily life and create avenues for meaningful relationships. Above all, they need access to God's word, faithful Christian witnesses, and growing fellowships of believers who can demonstrate the love and truth of Christ.
Pray that the Muslim Teli would have many opportunities to hear a clear presentation of the gospel and understand who Jesus Christ truly is.
Pray that God would raise up loving, Spirit-filled workers who will build genuine relationships among the Muslim Teli and faithfully share the message of salvation.
Pray that the Muslim Teli would be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that churches and believers will commit to ongoing prayer, outreach, and future gospel engagement among them.
Pray that any existing believers with connections to the Muslim Teli would be strengthened in their faith and equipped to share the gospel with their own community and neighboring peoples.
