Introduction / History

The Hindu Badhai are also known as the Vishwakarma, as they believe they are descendants of Vishvakarma, the Hindu god said to be the architect of the universe. They consider themselves Brahmins or of a high caste, but they are not always considered so by others. In ancient times, Badhai were described as various rishis or saints involved in meditation in jungles and performing scientific experiments for the betterment of others.

Before the Industrial Revolution in Europe, the Badhai enjoyed the status of chief engineers/architects in Indian villages and cultures. They were highly informed of ancient Indian art and culture, particularly pertaining to buildings, temples, chariots and war equipment. They created various idols and images of Hindu gods and goddesses to be worshipped by others. They provided sketches or blueprints to various other assisting technical castes for work. Though they are most numerous in India, some live in Pakistan and Nepal.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Badhai people in many communities lost their jobs after the influence of industrialization and the increase in people from other castes doing various technical works. Thus their inherited craftsmanship and skills are less praised or required. To suggest manual labor to a Vishwakarma is not always acceptable, as they tend to take pride in their work and possess strong self-esteem. They are usually employed in the fields of engineering and education, doing work such as small-scale industrial manufacturing or engineering work for large industries. Some Badhai work in the areas of carpentry, stonework and timber trade.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are traditional Hindus and follow the ancient way, as they themselves created various forms of Hindu idols and temples. Their identity is closely tied to the Hindu religious system. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia

What Are Their Needs?

Having historically created various idols and images of Hindu gods and goddesses, the Hindu Badhai possess traditional ties to Hinduism. They need Christians to come to them who will share the gospel with them and call them to trust in the one true God.

Prayer Items

Pray the Lord will send Christians to the Badhai people who will treat them with love and respect, not seeing them through the lens of the caste system.
Pray Christians will share the gospel with the Badhai people.
Pray the Badhai people will forsake their idolatry and trust in the one true God.
Pray believers among the Badhai people would make disciples of those around them.
