Introduction / History

The Lalemse Samo, also known as Kalemse or Samo, Kalemse, are a subgroup of the broader Samo (Sanan) people, part of the Mande/Mandinka ethnic family. They are principally found in Burkina Faso's northwest region, with some villages across the border in Mali. They have historical ties to the migrations and expansions of Mande peoples in West Africa.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Their homeland is one of the country's driest, with less than 700 mm (28 inches) of rainfall per year. This amount is barely adequate for raising their staple crop, millet. Rainy seasons since the 1970s have been less reliable, resulting in very poor harvests in certain years. As much as their means allow, the Kalemse raise livestock to help meet their needs.

The Samo culture is a mixture of traditional and modern influences. Women wear traditional African cloths, while men and children dress in Western-style clothing.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though there are Christians among the Kalemse, most remain with their traditional religions. They look to the spirit world for answers to their many problems. Their religious breakdown includes a majority practicing ethnic/animist religions, with minorities following Islam and Christianity.

What Are Their Needs?

In many respects, life is difficult for the Kalemse. In the area of health care, they face many challenges — the lack of clinics in the region, malnutrition, impure water, and tropical diseases. In education, too, work is still to be done. There are only a few primary schools serving the area. They need reliable water sources, improved agricultural support, better healthcare access, and educational opportunities.

Prayer Items

Pray for wells, schools, and medical clinics for the Kalemse people so they can have better access to clean water, education, and healthcare.
Pray for adequate staffing of the few medical clinics and schools in their region of Burkina Faso.
Pray for them to have the gift of faith that Jesus Christ is the one who can help them with their practical needs as well as their spiritual ones.
Pray that soon Kalemse disciples will be making more disciples among their own people in Burkina Faso.
Pray for the translation and distribution of more Scripture and audio resources in the Kalamse language to reach those who follow traditional religions.
