About four to five hundred years ago there were Japanese in Southeast Asia on a somewhat large scale for a short time. One of the communities was in southern Vietnam. The Japanese then integrated and intermarried with the Vietnamese. Some were Japanese merchants marrying with a prominent Vietnamese family, the Nguyen, which is the most common Vietnamese surname.
In World War II, Japan conquered Vietnam and maintained a military force there until they were defeated in 1945.
