Introduction / History

Chaamba is an Arab Bedouin (Bedu) tribe that only lives in central Algeria, specifically in Ouargla, El Oued, Timimoun, Beni Abbes, and the Grand Erg Occidental. This is what is called the "oasis district." They speak the Hilalian dialect of Algerian Arabic. Traditionally they were caravan traders and camel herders but today most are settled near oases.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many Chaambas make their living by cultivating and selling date palms. They are heavily dependent on limited water supplies which puts them at odds with the nearby Mozabites. Sometimes these conflicts have led to death. Others work in desert tourism, the oil industry, or for the Algerian government.

One of the best-attested Bedouin characteristics across North Africa and the Middle East is hospitality. Desert environments require cooperation and mutual assistance among travelers and neighboring groups. Among the Chaamba, as among other Bedouin peoples, generosity toward guests has long been considered an important virtue. Family honor, hospitality, respect for elders, and loyalty to relatives have historically been important values among Bedouin groups across North Africa, including the Chaamba.

Traditionally, households often included several generations working together. Decisions affecting marriage, migration, livestock, and property commonly involved the wider family rather than only the nuclear household.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Chaambas are almost entirely Maliki, one of the four major schools of thought among Sunni Muslims. Their sect was founded by Malik ibn Anas (c.?711–795 CE), and it took a unique position regarding the all-important Sunnah, the body of teachings and practices of Mohammed. They view the Sunnah differently than other sectors of Sunni Islam.

What Are Their Needs?

Chaambas need adequate water sources for their date trees. Without water, they lose their livelihood. Spiritually, they have very few if any opportunities to encounter Christ followers or the Water of Life only Jesus offers.

Pray that soon there will be Chaambas who put all their faith in Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords.
