The Bassa-Kontagora are an indigenous subgroup of the wider Bassa peoples, living mainly around Kontagora in Niger State. Their roots trace back to ancient settlements connected to the Nok cultural region, with a long history of farming communities, strong kinship ties, and rich ceremonial traditions.
Most families farm millet, sorghum, maize, and yams, supplementing income through fishing, weaving, and small trade. Extended families live close together, valuing respect for elders and communal cooperation. Festivals such as the Ugunu celebration include music, dance, and masquerades that express identity and spiritual beliefs. Meals center on grains, soups, vegetables, and occasional fish or meat.
In Nigeria, Christians suffer significant and severe persecution – to such a degree that Nigeria has been the most violent place in the world for followers of Jesus for several years. In northern Nigeria, 12 states have implemented Islamic law, creating a system where Christians live as second-class citizens, and conversion from Islam can be severely punished.
Violent Islamic militant groups also operate across northern Nigeria and into the country's central region. Some of these groups – including Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), an offshoot of Islamic State – target followers of Jesus and any properties owned by Christians. Other Christians, particularly farmers in Nigeria's Middle Belt, are confronted by Islamic militants among the Fulani people, who disproportionately attack Christian communities with horrific violence.
There are few Bassa-Kontagora evangelicals, but a significant number who identify as Christians. Most follow traditional ethnic religions centered on belief in a supreme creator, spirits, and ancestral mediation, expressed through sacrifices, festivals, and ritual practices. Those who identify as Christian often blend faith with traditional customs.
Access to education, clean water, healthcare, and economic opportunity is limited, especially in rural areas. Many communities face seasonal food insecurity and preventable disease. Spiritual understanding of Scripture and discipleship remains shallow, and local believers need encouragement and training to share their faith effectively. Bassa-Kontagora are in great need of spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.
Pray for open hearts to the gospel and for mature local believers to arise as witnesses.
Pray for improved access to clean water, medical care, and education.
Pray for peace, provision, and protection for Bassa-Kontagora families.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, discipleship materials, and evangelism resources in the Bassa-Kontagora language.
Pray that the Bassa-Kontagora Christians would wholeheartedly embrace the great commission, preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples.
