Phuza villages are typically small and tightly-knit, with homes built from locally sourced materials like wood and stone. Life revolves around family, farming, and seasonal rhythms, with communal cooperation being essential for survival in this remote area.
The Phuza practice a combination of animism and ancestor worship. They believe that spirits inhabit the natural world, especially in the mountains, rivers, and forests that surround them. These spirits are thought to influence their daily lives and agricultural success. To honor and appease these spirits, the Phuza conduct rituals and ceremonies, particularly during important life events and agricultural milestones. Ancestor worship is central to their spiritual life, with offerings and ceremonies aimed at maintaining harmony between the living and their ancestors. Some Buddhist influence has reached the Phuza, but traditional beliefs remain dominant.
The Phuza people face significant challenges due to their remote location and limited access to essential services. Healthcare facilities are scarce, leaving many without proper medical care. Education opportunities are also limited, with few children receiving formal schooling. Economic opportunities beyond subsistence farming are minimal, making it difficult for the Phuza to improve their standard of living. Development initiatives that focus on providing access to education, healthcare and sustainable economic opportunities would greatly improve their quality of life. Programs that respect their cultural practices and offer practical solutions for economic development would benefit the Phuza in their efforts to adapt to modern challenges.
