The Loi/Baloi are a Bantu ethnic group living in the western DRC in Equateur Province. They are part of the larger Bangi ethnolinguistic group.
Living near the Congo River, their primarily livelihood is comprised of fishing, both for food and trade, and river-based commerce. Historically, the larger people group of which they are a part has dominated canoe trade routes on the Congo River. They also engage in subsistence agriculture, cultivating the staple crop cassava, maize, plantains, bananas, and groundnuts with hand tools. Animals raised include goats, pigs, dogs, cats, chickens, and ducks. They are known for their large slit drums used in ceremonies and for communication. Canoes are amongst their most important possessions. Property is inherited patrilineally, with the eldest son as preferred heir. They speak the Loi/Baloi language but were also influential in the development of the Lingala language now widely used in the DRC. They live in large settlements on the water's edge. Huts are built on mounts in water that is deep enough for canoes. They live in elongated villages consisting of long rectangular huts grouped in pairs with intervals between pairs.
The vast majority are Roman Catholics, with a small minority of evangelicals. Former traditional religion has survived mainly as a syncretic element—respect for ancestors and reliance on protective charms or rituals practiced alongside Christianity. They call God Nzambe or Nzambi.
They are affected by countrywide instability and weak infrastructure especially regarding transportation. Very poor roads or none at all result in dependence on river transport, limited access to markets, and difficulty reaching schools and healthcare facilities. There is a high rate of poverty and low employment, a high rate of disease and a lack of clean water and sanitation.
