Introduction / History

The Shanenawa are a tribe who live in Acre in Brazil in Feijo. They speak Portuguese but the older people and the children tend to speak in their own language Shanenawa. Shane means bird and Nawa means foreign people.

The Shanenawa migrated after problems with the rubber boom earlier last century. They are animist by religion but there are Shanenawa Christians due to missionaries coming to them. They are farmers and shepherds. Some of them are fishermen. They marry within their own group and are monogamous.

Some of the Shanenawa are involved in politics. Along with other tribes they have joined together in an organization to preserve their way of life.

The Shanenawa eat fish, sweet manioc and banana porridge. Many have their houses built on stilts.

Prayer Points

* Pray that the Shanenawa Christians will lead the others among them to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that the government of Brazil will allow missionaries who are Christians to evangelize the Amazonian tribes.
