Introduction / History

The Kholok people are an ethnic group residing in Nigeria, primarily in the central region of the country. Their language, also called Kholok, is part of the larger Chadic language family, which is spoken by several groups across northern and central Nigeria. The Kholok have a rich oral tradition, passing down stories, proverbs, and songs from generation to generation. Historically, the Kholok have lived in small, close-knit communities, often relying on subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Over the years, they have experienced both the challenges and opportunities that come with Nigeria's diverse and changing landscape, including interactions with neighboring ethnic groups and the influence of national events.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Kholok is centered around family and community. Most Kholok people are engaged in agriculture, cultivating crops such as millet, sorghum, and maize. Livestock such as goats and cattle are also important for their livelihood. Daily life is marked by communal activities, with extended families often living in compounds and sharing resources. They observe traditional gender roles, with men typically responsible for farming and herding, while women manage the household and participate in local markets. Education is valued, but access to quality schools can be limited, especially in rural areas. Health care is another challenge, as many Kholok villages are far from medical facilities, making it difficult to address both routine and emergency health needs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Roughly 2/3 of the Kholok people identify as Muslim. They blend Islamic teachings with their traditional religion, which focuses on appeasing the spirit world. The message of Jesus Christ has not yet taken deep root in their culture. Yet there is a small Church among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kholok people face a range of physical and spiritual needs. Access to clean water and reliable health care is limited, leading to preventable diseases and high infant mortality rates. Educational opportunities are often lacking, especially for girls, which hinders the community's development and future prospects. Economically, the Kholok are vulnerable to fluctuations in weather and market prices, making food security a constant concern.

Spiritually, the greatest need is for the gospel of Jesus Christ to be proclaimed and embraced. Without the hope and forgiveness that only Christ can offer, the Kholok remain separated from the fullness of life that God desires for them. There is a pressing need for workers who will bring the good news, disciple new believers, and help the Kholok become part of the global body of Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for improved access to clean water, health care, and education for the Kholok people, so that their physical well-being may be strengthened.
Ask God to raise up workers who are willing to live among the Kholok, learn their language, and share the love and mercy of Jesus Christ in both word and deed.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would prepare the hearts of the Kholok to receive the gospel, breaking the power of fear and spiritual darkness.
Intercede for the few believers who may be present, that they would be strengthened in faith and become bold witnesses to their families and neighbors.
Pray that the Kholok would one day join the global discipleship force, bringing glory to God among the nations.
