Introduction / History

During the Ottoman empire, the Turks ruled Libya beginning in the middle of the sixteenth century. Turks came to live in Libya then and Turkish soldiers married Arab women. The Ottoman Turks introduced the Hanafi School of Islam to the Libyans. From the last twenty-five years of the last century and onwards more Turks have come to live in Libya.

Most of the Libyan Turks live in Misrata and there is a large number of them living here. Some also live in Tripoli and the Libyan Sahara. They speak Turkish and Arabic. Islam is their religion.

Recently organizations have been formed that brings notice of the Libyan Turks and promotes their culture.
