Introduction / History

The Tomas are also called the Lomas, and they live in Guinea, West Africa. Their language is also called Toma.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Tomas have a patrilineal inheritance structure where inheritance is passed down through the father s side of the family. Everyone marries outside their clan, and the wife must move in with her husband s family.

They have a Poro society that teaches boys their roles in the social order. Initiation rites are performed in the forest. When the boys are initiated, they are considered to be men. Elders and spiritual leaders perform the rituals. They use artifacts in these rituals and ceremonies.

Tomas are farmers who grow rice and trade crafted goods at markets. They create sacred masks that resemble the faces of humans or animals for ceremonial purposes. Families work together for the common good.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Tomas adhere to ethnic religion, but they also have an Evangelical minority. They have a complete Bible and numerous audio gospel materials.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tomas need the work of the Holy Spirit to saturate their society, showing them the way to true power and goodness.
