Introduction / History

There are many small tribal communities in the Philippines. Language is the chief distinguishing feature of their tribal cultures. For example, the Tagabawa Bagobo have their own language. Tagabawa is one of the subgroups of the greater Bagobo people. They live in Mindanao, a large southern island.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Almost all tribal groups in the Philippines are engaged in farming. The main crops they cultivate are wet rice and maize. Secondary crops consist of vegetables, tobacco and coffee. On their farms, they also raise domestic animals such as dogs, goats and chickens. They have their own traditional dances and music. Most Tagabawa villages have a "headman" or chief who acts as a judge over disputes.

Most Tagabawa villages are organized in clusters around individual gardens. The fundamental social unit among these tribes is the extended family. Marriages are generally arranged while the prospective bride and groom are still quite young. Due to strict taboos surrounding sexual relations between relatives, most marriages are "exogamous," meaning they take place with members from another community tribe. Depending on the influence of outside cultures, the clothing of the tribes varies. Some wear simple loincloths, while others dress in modern styles of clothing.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most members of the Tagabawa Bagobo tribe adhere to their traditional religion and serve the spirit world. Fortunately, there are some who are dedicated to Jesus Christ. Like most tribal peoples, they struggle to keep their faith in Jesus Christ rather than in a network of ancient spirits and Melu, their supreme being.

What Are Their Needs?

Although these remote tribes are slowly being forced into a modern world, they continue to struggle with life's most basic essentials. They desperately need quality medical care, modern farming techniques and educational opportunities that can give them a better future.
