There are a few thousand speakers of the Edera Awyu language. They live in the province of Papua Indonesia. As a livelihood they primarily garden and hunt; some also work for a logging company in this swampy area of South Papua. Rubber plantations have been started but have not been profitable. With their land at an altitude of less than 100 meters above sea level, the Edera Awyu people can best be accessed by boat.
The people eat sago, bananas, and yams. Evening electricity is available in Amk. A generator in Yame and Harapan provides some electricity. Drinking water is obtained from springs or the river. Malaria, cholera, and skin diseases are common even though a medical worker is assigned to almost every village. Edera Awyu leaders are elected locally. The Edera Awyu people have no gospel cassettes, films or videos in their language.
It is estimated that less than half of the Edera Awyu speakers have understood the gospel but there is one Protestant church (in Benggo) and a number of Catholic churches in the area.
