Introduction / History

Popoloca is the Aztec word for peoples who speak a language other than N huatl, their own tongue. Some still speak it while others depend on Spanish. The Popoloca have subgroups including the San Marcos Tlalcoyalco. They live in the high desert central plains of Mexico just south of Mexico City.


What Are Their Lives Like?

There is a special berry called the Mexican Olive, which is chewy and a specialty to them roasted or boiled with tortillas and garlic salsa. They also grow Pinion pine seeds.


What Are Their Beliefs?

The background of most San Marcos Tlalcoyalco Popolocas is Roman Catholic. There are a lot of Jehovah Witnesses and Luz del Mundo. Both of which are sects that have a lot of influence in the community. The Evangelical church meets on New Testament principals only in the name of Jesus Christ. There was a split between the two leading families, and they started another church.


What Are Their Needs?

The people have a lack of water so during the dry season there is a lot of sickness because of the contaminated dust in the air. They need better hygiene. A common sickness is typhoid fever.
