Introduction / History

The Musom are a small people group of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea, associated with the Busu River tributary area in the lower Markham region. They belong to the northeastern coastal and river-valley societies of Morobe, where small communities have long been shaped by village life, gardening, kinship ties, and contact with neighboring language groups. Their language is Musom, also known as Misatik, an Austronesian language spoken in a single village in Morobe Province.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Musom live in a small village setting in Morobe Province where daily life is tied to local garden land, nearby waterways, and close family networks. Because Musom is documented as a single-village language community in the lower Markham and Busu area, their ordinary life is best understood as village-based, with small-scale gardening, local food gathering, and close clan and household cooperation shaping daily rhythms. In this part of Morobe, movement between settlements often depends on foot travel and local routes, while multilingual contact is common because of intermarriage and proximity to neighboring groups. Their language in ordinary life is Musom, though public linguistic sources note that many also use Tok Pisin and may also speak nearby languages because of regular contact with surrounding communities.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Musom are identified as Christian, with Protestant Christianity strongly represented.

What Are Their Needs?

The Musom need strong biblical discipleship so that a broadly Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, clear understanding of the gospel, and faithful obedience to Christ. Where there is a strong Christian base, the need is for healthy churches, faithful shepherds, sound teaching, and believers who stand firmly on Scripture rather than settling for nominal Christianity. Because they are a small community surrounded by other groups and shaped by ongoing social contact, they need strong Christian families, mature local leaders, and an enduring witness that remains faithful across generations. They also need renewed zeal to carry the gospel beyond their own people and to serve neighboring ethnic groups with faithful witness.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Musom would grow in genuine repentance, biblical clarity, and joyful obedience to Jesus Christ.
Pray that pastors, elders, and other local leaders would teach Scripture faithfully and lead with humility and courage.
Pray that the churches among the Musom would be spiritually healthy, doctrinally sound, and protected from nominal Christianity.
Pray for strong Christian families, enduring discipleship, and faithful local leadership among the Musom.
Pray that the Musom would actively reach out to other ethnic groups with the gospel and become a faithful witness beyond their own community.
