Introduction / History

Nor Murik is an indigenous people group of the Sepik coastal lagoons in Papua New Guinea. Related to the Murik groups, they have long been known as skilled traders and canoe builders, linking inland and coastal communities through exchange networks and kinship ties.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life centers on fishing, sago processing, and small-scale gardening. Extended families live in close-knit communities where elders guide decisions. Ceremonies mark life events and seasons, often featuring canoe displays, dances, and shared meals of fish and sago.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional beliefs emphasize ancestral spirits and unseen forces tied to the water and land. Christianity has reached the region, and the vast majority of the Nor Murik claim Christianity, but syncretism is common, blending biblical teaching with older spiritual practices.

What Are Their Needs?

Clear biblical teaching is important so faith can take root deeply rather than remain mixed with traditional beliefs. Access to Scripture in the heart language would strengthen discipleship. Remote geography limits consistent pastoral support and community development.
