Fishing is a way of life for the Malimba people. Their six villages are situated in two areas of the Sanaga-Maritime Division of the Littoral Province. The first area is just north of Edea (Malimba and Malimba Farm). The other area is west of Mouanko (Maljedu, Malmbenge, Bongo and Mulongo) in Mouanko Subdivision. These coastal villages are accessible only by motorized dugout canoe. Surrounding language groups include Duala, Basaa and Bakoko.
Many people speak French, and some have learned to speak Bakoko. At one time Malimba was classified as a dialect of Duala. The two languages are so similar that Malimba people say that anyone who can read and write Duala can easily figure out how to write Malimba as well even though the Malimba language is unwritten. People have a favorable attitude toward literacy in French, Duala and Malimba. Bible translation need is dependent upon degree of comprehension of Duala, which already has a whole Bible. If it is true that all Malimba people speak or understand Duala, this may be meeting their needs. Interviewees said that Malimba-speaking churchgoers have not yet expressed any interest in Bible translation. Malimba churches normally read Scripture in French or Duala, without any interpretation into the mother tongue because everyone understands these two languages of wider communication.
Pray for the spiritual growth of believers. Pray that people's lives will be profoundly impacted by the Word of God. Pray that people will turn from traditional religion to faith in Christ.
