The Mitsogos only live in the highlands of Gabon. They are also called Tsogo, which is the name of their language.
When French colonizers encountered them in 1857, they found a people adept at producing cloth and iron goods. The French took full control of the Mitsogo homeland in 1899. One of their chiefs, Mbombe, was known as a great fighter against the French.
In addition to producing useful metal goods, the Mitsogos are also farmers. Most agricultural people also keep chickens for eggs and poultry.
In the 20th century, the Mitsogos became Roman Catholic due to the French influence. There is also an evangelical element.
