The Kupang people live in the western part of Timor Island in East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. Their language, Kupang Malay, is a creole based on Malay and Portuguese influences, and it serves as a lingua franca in the region.
Historically, the Kupang area was a center of trade during the Portuguese and Dutch colonial periods, which introduced Christianity and European cultural elements. Despite modernization, the Kupang people maintain strong ties to their language and cultural traditions.
Kupang communities are primarily urban and semi-urban, with many families engaged in trade, fishing, and small-scale farming. Their diet consists of rice, maize, fish, and vegetables. Some work in government or education, while others migrate for employment.
Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby, sharing responsibilities and resources. Community life includes traditional festivals marked by music, dance, and rituals, often blended with Christian celebrations. Access to healthcare and education is better than in rural areas, but economic challenges remain.
Most Kupang people identify as Christian, primarily Protestant, due to missionary influence during the colonial period. Catholic communities also exist. While Christianity is dominant, traditional animistic practices persist in some areas, including respect for ancestral spirits and nature-related rituals. Syncretism is common, where biblical faith coexists with cultural traditions. Churches are present, but many believers lack deep discipleship and access to Scripture in their heart language, leaving spiritual growth incomplete.
Healthcare and clean water are still limited in poorer neighborhoods, and economic opportunities are uneven. Education quality varies, and many young people migrate for work, weakening family and community ties. Spiritually, the Kupang people need strong biblical teaching and discipleship to grow in faith and become part of the global mission force. Resources for leadership training and Scripture engagement are essential for building vibrant, Christ-centered communities.
Pray that Kupang families will experience improved health and access to clean water.
Ask God to prepare and send Kupang workers who will teach the gospel clearly and disciple believers to disciple others.
Pray for the translation and distribution of the Bible and Christian materials so that the Kupang people can understand and apply God's Word.
Intercede for Kupang believers to grow in faith and join the global discipleship movement, bringing the light of Christ to Muslim communities.
