The Labu in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea, primarily in rural areas south and east of Port Moresby. Their communities are situated in a region where the inland foothills meet coastal plains, and the landscape of rivers, forests, and valleys has shaped local identity and patterns of life over many generations.
The Labu speak the Labu language, which belongs to the Austronesian language family within the Oceanic branch. This connects them linguistically to other island and coastal peoples across the Pacific, even as they maintain their own distinct heritage and traditions.
Life among the Labu is closely connected to the natural environment. Villages are typically small, and extended family relationships play a central role in daily life and social organization.
Most Labu people depend on subsistence agriculture, tending gardens that provide staple foods suited to the local climate. Hunting, fishing in nearby rivers and streams, and gathering from the forest supplement their diet. The land also provides materials for building homes and making everyday tools and crafts.
Community cooperation is essential for daily activities such as planting, harvesting, and caring for children. Because the region is linguistically diverse, multilingualism is common: the Labu language is central within the community, while trade languages such as Tok Pisin are used for broader interaction with neighboring groups.
The Labu are largely identified with Christianity, and the gospel has had a meaningful presence among them. Christian teaching and church gatherings play important roles in shaping community values, worship, and instruction.
At the same time, traditional beliefs or cultural understandings related to the spiritual world may still be present in some contexts. These elements are rooted in longstanding cultural traditions and are approached differently within families and community life. Ongoing biblical teaching helps believers mature in clarity and faith.
Portions of Scripture, including the New Testament, are available in the Labu language, providing a foundation for personal faith and church life.
There is a continuing need for deeper discipleship and strong biblical teaching so that Labu believers can grow in spiritual maturity and apply God's Word in their daily lives. Access to the full Bible in the Labu language would further strengthen both individuals and the church community.
Training and equipping local leaders is essential so pastors and teachers can guide their communities with sound doctrine and wisdom. Strong leadership supports both spiritual growth and practical life needs.
Because many Labu communities are located in rural settings, practical challenges such as limited access to education, transportation, and resources can affect daily life and ministry opportunities. Addressing both spiritual and practical needs helps support long?term growth and well?being.
Pray that the Labu believers will grow in a Holy Spirit directed faith that will leave them with peace, joy, and hope.
Pray for local church leaders to be equipped with sound doctrine and strengthened in their ministry.
Pray that families will be grounded in biblical truth and that younger generations will follow Christ with conviction.
Pray for increased access to scripture, including ongoing translation and availability of the full Bible in their language.
