Introduction / History

The Kusaghe are an indigenous people of the Solomon Islands who speak an Oceanic Austronesian language on New Georgia Island. They are part of the broader Melanesian cultural world, shaped by island geography, clan identity, and oral traditions passed through generations. Like many groups in the region, their society encountered Christianity through 19th–20th century missionary efforts.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is village-centered, with subsistence farming and fishing forming the economic base. Families are close-knit and often work together in gardens or coastal activities. Food commonly includes root crops, fish, coconut, and tropical fruits. Community events include church gatherings, feasts, and traditional dances, reflecting both Christian and ancestral heritage.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Kusaghe identify as Christian, largely within Protestant traditions. However, traditional beliefs persist, including respect for ancestral spirits and the idea that spiritual forces inhabit nature. Christianity is often blended with these older practices, as seen throughout the Solomon Islands.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to Scripture in their own language would strengthen understanding of the gospel message. Deeper discipleship is necessary, so faith moves beyond nominal Christianity into transformed lives. Geographic isolation can limit education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, affecting overall well-being.
