Introduction / History

The Koroni people live in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, mainly in Morowali Regency near Tolo Bay. They speak the Koroni language, which belongs to the Austronesian family. Historically, the Koroni have been part of the Bungku-Bajau cluster, sharing cultural ties with other coastal communities. Their ancestors settled along the eastern coast of Sulawesi, relying on fishing and farming for survival. Isolation and rugged terrain have helped preserve their distinct identity over generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Koroni families typically live in small villages near the coast. Houses are built from wood and bamboo, often raised on stilts to protect from flooding. Men work as fishermen or farmers, cultivating rice and coconuts, while women manage household tasks and help with farming. Family life is close-knit, and elders are respected for their wisdom. Celebrations often center around weddings and harvest festivals, marked by traditional music and shared meals. Daily food includes rice, fish, and vegetables, with coconut playing an important role in cooking. Modern conveniences are limited, and most travel is by boat or narrow roads.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Koroni people primarily follow Islam, which influences their customs and daily life. Traditional practices and folk beliefs may still be observed in some areas, especially in ceremonies related to nature and family. There is little exposure to the gospel, and biblical faith is almost unknown among them.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Koroni communities lack access to good healthcare and education. Children often leave school early to help with family work, limiting future opportunities. Medical care is scarce, and preventable illnesses are common. Clean water and sanitation are ongoing challenges. Spiritually, most Koroni have never heard a clear presentation of the good news of Jesus Christ. There is a need for loving workers who can share hope and truth, and for local believers to grow strong in faith and become part of God's mission to bless all nations.

Prayer Items

Pray for hearts among the Koroni to be open to the message of Jesus, who offers forgiveness and new life.
Pray that families will experience peace and unity as they hear and respond to God's word.
Pray that Koroni elders and family leaders will have dreams and visions of the risen Christ.
Pray that future believers among the Koroni will become bold witnesses and join in reaching other groups with the gospel.
Pray for workers who will live among them and show Christ's love in practical and spiritual ways.
