Introduction / History

The Kopar are a small people group living in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, mainly along the lower reaches of the Sepik River in villages such as Kopar, Wongan, and Singrin.

Their language, also called Kopar, belongs to the Ramu–Lower Sepik family of Papuan languages and has historically been spoken only in this localized region, reflecting long periods of relative isolation.

The Kopar community is part of the remarkable linguistic and cultural mosaic that characterizes New Guinea.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kopar live in small riverine and swamp?forest villages along waterways that define much of daily life. These environments provide fish and other aquatic resources while gardens of root crops and bananas help sustain families. Homes are traditionally constructed from materials gathered locally, such as timber, palm leaves, and thatch.

Travel is primarily by canoe or on foot, as roads and modern infrastructure are limited in this part of East Sepik. Community relationships, kinship networks, and cooperation play central roles in daily life, with extended families working together to cultivate gardens, build shelters, and care for children. Access to formal services such as healthcare and schooling is constrained by their remote setting, making self?sufficiency and local knowledge vital to survival.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all of the Kopar identify as Christian, but only a smaller portion are classified as evangelical believers, indicating that many may not yet have a clear, biblically grounded understanding of the gospel.

A minority continue to uphold traditional spiritual beliefs tied to the natural world, unseen forces, and ancestral influences. These beliefs have historically shaped community rituals and interpretations of daily events.

Scripture translation in the Kopar language has begun but no portions of the Bible are yet available in written form, and there are no known audio Bibles, gospel recordings, or Jesus Film resources in Kopar.

This means that many Kopar people have limited access to God's Word in the language spoken within their community.

What Are Their Needs?

The most pressing need among the Kopar is for clear and faithful presentation of the gospel that leads to deep, personal faith in Jesus Christ, rooted in Scripture rather than mixed with traditional belief systems.

Completion and distribution of the Bible in their language is a critical need so that individuals and families can engage with God's word in a form they can understand directly.

There is also a need for trained, faithful local leaders who can shepherd believers, teach sound doctrine, and help strengthen church life within Kopar villages.

Practically, the Kopar's remote environment limits access to healthcare, education, and transportation. Improvements in these areas would support both physical well?being and opportunities for spiritual growth and community development.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Kopar people would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that those identifying as Christians would grow in biblical understanding and not blend Christian teaching with traditional practices.
Pray for the completion and widespread availability of the Bible in the Kopar language.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can guide and disciple others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by a biblical understanding of God's truth.
Pray for greater access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation to support community wholeness.
