Introduction / History

The Vakutain are part of the Kiriwina people of the Trobriand Islands in Milne Bay Province. They share a matrilineal heritage shaped by village life, seafaring trade, and strong clan identity. Longstanding contact with missionaries led to widespread Christian influence, while traditional customs continue to shape daily life. Their primary language is called Kilivila.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Daily life centers on subsistence gardening, especially yam cultivation, fishing, and small-scale trade. Families are organized through matrilineal clans, with inheritance and land passed through the mother's line. Celebrations include yam harvest festivals, dances, and feasts. Their food consists mainly of yams, taro, fish, coconuts, and tropical fruits.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Christian, yet many still blend biblical faith with traditional beliefs involving ancestral spirits, magic, and ritual practices, especially connected to gardening and community life.

What Are Their Needs?

Spiritual growth is needed so faith in Christ is rooted in Scripture rather than mixed with traditional practices. Strong biblical teaching would help families build healthy marriages, raise children in godly ways, and develop local church leadership.
