The Kele, also called Lokele, are a Bantu people living primarily along the south bank of the Congo River between Kisangani and Isangi. They are part of the broader Mongo ethnolinguistic family and have a history shaped by riverine life, trade, and shifting social dynamics in northeastern Congo. The Kele were once known for a unique drum language used for long-distance communication, now extinct, that reflected deep community interconnection.
Most Kele live in rural river communities where fishing, small-scale farming, and trade sustain daily life. Extended families form the foundation of society, with elders guiding decisions and children contributing to work and care. Meals frequently include cassava, fish from the Congo River, plantains, and stews shared at family gatherings, and celebrations of marriage, harvests, and church festivals are central to community identity.
The majority of Kele identify as Christian, with many connected to local churches and Christian practices woven into life and celebrations. While traditional beliefs and interpretations of spiritual forces often coexist culturally, formal Christian teachings increasingly shape worldview and worship.
The Kele long for discipleship that deepens faith in Jesus Christ and anchors daily life in Scripture rather than syncretistic beliefs. Strengthening local Christian leadership and equipping believers to minister in their own language and culture will help the gospel take deeper root. Access to education and opportunities for youth would also bring hope and stability to families facing economic challenges. The Kele are in despirate need of a complete Bible faithfully translated in their heart language.
Pray that Kele believers will grow in Christlikeness and become fruit-bearing agents of reconciliation and hope in their communities.
Pray for protection and encouragement for pastors and teachers who shepherd churches amid social pressures.
Pray for provision of practical resources such as schooling, health care, and stable livelihoods for Kele families that reflect God's care and love.
Pray for the faithful translation and distribution of the complete Bible, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Kele language.
