Introduction / History

The Holoholo, also known as Kalanga, locally, are a matrilineal Bantu people who have lived along the shores of central Lake Tanganyika near Kalemie in Tanganyika Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their name Holoholo was given by colonial outsiders based on the tone of their greeting, while Kalanga means "people who were there first." They trace their roots to communities that migrated to this region in the 18th century during the expansion of the Luba Empire and have maintained community identity through oral traditions and village leadership by elders. Their primary language is called Holoholo.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Holoholo families are centered on extended matrilineal ties, and daily life revolves around farming sorghum and fishing from Lake Tanganyika. Villages typically consist of beehive-style huts and elders guide community decisions. Men clear fields and women often cultivate crops, while children help with chores and youth learn traditions from their elders. Celebrations happen around harvests and family milestones, and meals often include grains, local vegetables, and fish.

In eastern DRC, Christians face severe persecution amid violent conflict. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) – religious extremists with ties to the Islamic State group – have targeted Christian communities through massacres, abductions and the destruction of churches. Survivors report atrocities that are intended to eradicate the Christian presence.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are few evangelicals, but most Holoholo in the DRC identify as Christians, largely influenced by Roman Catholic presence in the region. While Christianity is central in churches and community life, some families blend expressions of faith with respect for ancestors and traditional symbols, like wider patterns of interwoven faith in Congo.

What Are Their Needs?

The Holoholo community longs for a deeper understanding of God's love in Christ that sustains through daily challenges and gives purpose beyond traditional rhythms of life. They seek disciples who will walk alongside believers, nurturing faith that bears fruit in families and villages. Physical needs include support for education and sustainable agriculture that can ease cycles of poverty and food insecurity. The Holoholo need spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith.

Prayer Items

Pray for Holoholo believers to grow in Christlike maturity and be empowered to share the gospel with their neighbors.
