The Graged, also known as the Star people, are an ethnic group living in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, particularly in areas near the lower Sepik River and surrounding lowlands. They are part of the wider network of small, distinct language groups that characterize the Sepik region. The Graged speak their own language, which reflects their heritage and their connections with neighboring communities.
Historically, the Graged lived in small, semi-isolated villages shaped by the riverine and forest environment. The Sepik River system has played a central role in their history, serving as a route for travel, trade, and communication. Their society developed around clan relationships, with leadership often based on influence, experience, and the ability to maintain harmony within the group.
Contact with outsiders increased during the colonial era through government patrols, traders, and missionaries. These interactions brought new religious ideas, education, and limited access to outside goods. While these influences brought change, the Graged have maintained many aspects of their traditional identity, adapting gradually to new ways of life.
Daily life for the Graged centers on subsistence living. Gardening is the primary source of food, with families growing crops such as sago, taro, bananas, and yams. Sago, processed from palm trees, is a staple food and plays a major role in their diet. Fishing in rivers and nearby waterways provides an important source of protein, and hunting may also supplement their food supply.
Work is shared within the community. Men are typically responsible for fishing, hunting, canoe building, and clearing land, while women focus on gardening, gathering sago, preparing meals, and caring for children. These roles are flexible when needed, especially in smaller communities.
Family life is built around extended kinship networks. Relatives often live close together and depend on one another for support. Elders are respected and serve as sources of knowledge, guidance, and cultural continuity.
Community gatherings are an important part of life. Ceremonies, feasts, marriages, and funerals bring people together and reinforce social ties. These events often include singing, dancing, and the sharing of food, reflecting both traditional customs and Christian influences.
The Graged are primarily identified as Christians, with Protestant traditions being the most common due to missionary activity in the region. Churches are a central part of village life and provide structure for worship, teaching, and community gatherings.
At the same time, traditional beliefs continue to shape aspects of spiritual understanding. These may include beliefs in spirits, ancestral influence, and unseen forces connected to the natural world. Such beliefs can affect how people understand illness, misfortune, and protection.
In many cases, Christian identity is expressed through participation in church life, but there may be limited access to consistent teaching or Scripture in the local language. This can result in a blending of Christian and traditional beliefs, with varying levels of personal understanding and commitment.
The Graged face physical challenges related to their remote and river-based environment. Access to healthcare is limited, and preventable diseases can impact families. Clean water and sanitation are ongoing concerns, particularly in areas dependent on river systems. Educational opportunities are also limited, especially beyond the early years.
Economic opportunities are scarce, and most families rely on subsistence gardening and fishing. Improved transportation and communication would help connect communities to essential services and resources.
Spiritually, there is a need for deeper understanding of the Christian faith. Many would benefit from access to Scripture in their own language and from trained leaders who can provide clear, consistent teaching. Strengthening local churches and encouraging personal faith are important ongoing needs.
Pray for access to healthcare, clean water, and education for the Graged communities.
Pray that Graged believers will share their faith with communities in East Asia that lack a gospel witness.
Pray for strong and faithful church leaders to guide and teach their people.
Pray for a deeper understanding of the gospel and personal commitment to Christ.
