The South Fali are an ethnolinguistic group based in the rocky plateaus and mountainous terrains of northern Cameroon. Their history is defined by resistance to 19th-century jihads, the "perched" architectural isolation that preserved their animist traditions, and recent socio-economic shifts to lowland farming. They trace their ancestry back to the Ngomma people and the ancient capital of Timpil. Many scholars also connect their cultural heritage to the Sao civilization that flourished around the Lake Chad region between the 6th and 16th centuries. During the 19th-century expansion of the Islamic empires, the Fali fiercely defended their independence. Because they successfully resisted the jihadists and maintained their traditional animist religions, the conquering Fulani labeled them "Kirdi"—a term meaning "pagans".
The South Fali of Cameroon are traditional subsistence farmers and former hunter-gatherers whose daily lives are defined by collaborative agriculture and strong kinship networks. Rooted in the rugged, mountainous Adamawa and North regions, their society remains deeply tied to the challenging landscape. Their agricultural cycle and diet center around sorghum, small millet, peanuts, beans, okra, and squash, supplemented by cotton as a cash crop. Farming is heavily manual, relying on traditional hoes and terraced slopes. They also keep small herds of goats, sheep, and cattle, which provide milk and meat while acting as symbols of wealth. Women play an essential economic role, spinning cotton, weaving fabrics, making pottery, and creating pyrographic designs on bottle gourds. Socially, the South Fali are a patrilineal and exogamous society governed by traditional clan chiefs and elders. Their villages feature "perched" family compounds built on steep mountainsides, consisting of compact round huts made of clay and stone with conical thatched roofs. Men and women share demanding physical labor: men typically handle clearing and planting, while women manage the livestock, huts, and daily meal preparations.
Most of the South Fali people of Cameroon identify with Islam, but it is blended with indigenous beliefs, in part due to regional missionary influence. Traditional animist practices remain heavily woven into daily life. These converts frequently maintain a blended faith, honoring nature spirits, performing ecological fertility rituals, and observing ancestral customs alongside their new religious teachings.
The South Fali of Cameroon, primarily living in the mountainous regions of the North Province, are predominantly subsistence farmers. Their primary needs revolve around basic infrastructure, educational development, food security, and access to healthcare. There is a severe lack of proper educational facilities for children in their remote mountain villages. Many community members lack basic literacy and educational skills, creating a need for missionary or community-based schools. Like much of the rural far north, the community faces significant health challenges, including malaria, respiratory diseases, and water-borne illnesses. Improved sanitation and access to treated drinking water are crucial to prevent diseases and lower infant mortality. Since the Fali rely primarily on subsistence farming (millet, sorghum, peanuts) on rugged, terraced hillsides, they need modernized farming tools, irrigation, and climate-resilient farming techniques to boost food security. On a broader scale, the South Fali exist within a country facing complex developmental and humanitarian crises. According to the UN, over 2.5 million people face acute food insecurity across the most heavily impacted regions. The South Fali need to put all their faith in Jesus Christ. Ideally Christian missionaries with a heart for children can live among them, teach them literacy skills, and allow the light of Jesus to shine through them.
