The Campidanese Sardinian people live on the island of Sardinia in Italy, on the southern part of the island known as Campidanu." Their language, also called Campidanese Sardinian, is one of the major varieties of the Sardinian language, and is considered an endangered language, still widely spoken by adults, but decreasingly used by younger generations. Sardinians have roots predating Roman times. Their language is so closely related to Latin that it is considered a living link to that language.
Sardinian homes are large, built for extended families, having courtyards that face inward. The courtyard is the heart of the home used for cooking, gathering, work, and celebrating. Home life is the center of the culture and often revolves around cooking and eating. Meals are long, shared, and celebratory. Hospitality is an important part of daily life as well, involving welcoming the guests with food, drinks and sweets. Life moves at a slow pace. Many lives are tied to agriculture, and they live on fertile soil good for growing wheat, and for vineyards and olive groves, as well as pasturing sheep. Today tourism is also a source of income. Local festivals are tied to agriculture. They often involve traditional dress and music. Community events are held in town squares and in courtyards and reinforce a strong sense of belonging.
The majority are deeply rooted in Roman Catholic faith and culture. There are very few evangelical believers amongst them and few evangelical materials.
Because Italian dominates public life, many of their problems revolve around the marginalization of their language and a resulting feeling of being excluded. This results in an erosion of traditions and cultural identity.
Pray that the Campidanese Sardinians may come to know Christ personally and deeply.
Pray that soon Campidanese Sardinians will become Christ's ambassadors to those without the hope of the Lord.
Pray that Campidanese Sardinians may become grounded in a biblical faith and become enabled to share that faith with others, taking their place in worldwide mission.
