Introduction / History

The Ottawa (also called Odawa or Odaawa) are an Algonquian-speaking people. The name "Ottawa" comes from the Algonquian word adaawe, meaning "to trade," reflecting their historic role as important traders. Historically, the Ottawa migrated into the Great Lakes region and established villages around northern Michigan, the shores of Lake Erie, and on riverbanks and islands. Today, most live in Canada, and a smaller number are in the United States.

What Are Their Lives Like?

As Native Americans, they struggle with their identity, and historic injustices. Some live in Native American communities while others have integrated into the English-speaking population.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The religious life of Ottawa people today reflects a blend of traditional beliefs and Christianity. Historically, Christian missionaries (especially French and later American) made inroads among the Ottawa, leading to the adoption of various Christian denominations. At the same time, many Ottawa continue to honor their heritage through traditional religion. They hold ceremonies, preserve stories, and maintain cultural practices connected to their ancestral worldview. Tribal gatherings such as pow-wows also provide a space for spiritual and cultural expression.

What Are Their Needs?

Language classes, educational materials, and intergenerational transmission would help preserve their linguistic heritage. Though tribal enterprises exist, many Ottawa communities may benefit from further economic opportunities, capacity building, and sustainable development. There are likely needs for health care, education, housing, and youth support.

Prayer Items

Pray that Ottawa Christ followers will spread the Lord's fame to those who need hope and a purpose.
Pray for wisdom for tribal leaders as they navigate economic development and cultural issues.
Pray for God's to heal the Ottawa of past hurts from displacement, treaty losses, and cultural disruption, and for a strong sense of hope based on faith in Christ.
