Introduction / History

The Bush People Mian are an indigenous people of Papua New Guinea, located in the rugged rural areas of Chimbu (Simbu) Province. They are also known simply as the Mian, and they speak the Golin language, a Papuan language of the Trans-New Guinea family spoken locally in the Gumine District and beyond. Their history, like many highland groups in PNG, is rooted in long-standing village and clan life with deep connections to land, family, and language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Bush People Mian daily life revolves around subsistence agriculture, tending gardens of sweet potato, taro, and other staples, and raising pigs and chickens for both food and cultural exchange. Extended family networks are central; multiple generations often live together, sharing work and child-rearing responsibilities. Celebrations include communal feasts and traditional events tied to planting and harvest seasons, with food centered on root crops and locally sourced produce. Markets and village gatherings reinforce social bonds. The rugged highlands environment shapes work rhythms and cultural rhythms.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bush People Mian are predominantly Christian, with the majority identifying with Christian traditions and many influenced by Protestant expressions of faith. While Christianity is embraced, local customs and worldviews often blend with Christian practices, reflecting a lived faith that coexists with cultural heritage.

What Are Their Needs?

Among the Bush People Mian, there is ongoing need for deeper discipleship and biblical grounding that nurtures mature Christian faith and equips believers to live out the gospel in community and leadership roles. Opportunities to strengthen local leadership, especially among youth and church workers, will help sustain and expand Christian witness. Access to culturally relevant Scripture and training materials supports lifelong growth in Christ. Physical needs include support for education, health, and sustainable agriculture that uplifts families and enhances community well-being.

Prayer Items
