Introduction / History

The Yerakai people live in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, in a remote area near the Ambunti District. Their communities are small and closely tied to a single geographic area, with village life shaped by the surrounding rivers, forests, and lowland terrain.

Their language, also called Yerakai, belongs to the Sepik language family, a group of languages known for their diversity and long-standing presence in the region. The isolation of these communities over generations has contributed to the development of a distinct identity, preserved through their language and local traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Yerakai live in small, rural villages where daily life is centered on subsistence activities. Families depend on gardening, fishing, and the natural environment for food and materials. Rivers play an important role in transportation and livelihood, often serving as the main routes between communities.

Homes are typically constructed from local materials such as wood, sago palm, and thatch. Life is communal, with extended families sharing responsibilities and resources. Knowledge is passed down through generations by word of mouth, including practical skills, customs, and stories that shape community life.

Their language is used within the village, while interaction with outsiders may involve broader regional languages. Because of their geographic isolation, many aspects of daily life remain traditional and closely connected to the land.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Yerakai are identified with Christianity. The message of the gospel has reached their communities, and it has shaped many aspects of belief and practice.

However, as in many remote areas, understanding of biblical teaching may vary, especially where access to Scripture is limited. Without a complete Bible in their language, believers may depend on teaching from outside sources or other languages, which can limit deeper personal engagement with God's Word.

Translation work has begun, but there are currently no complete portions of Scripture available in their language. This creates an ongoing need for clearer access to the full counsel of Scripture.

What Are Their Needs?

The Yerakai face the challenges that come with living in a remote and isolated region. Access to healthcare, education, and transportation can be limited, and travel between communities is often difficult. Infrastructure is minimal, and daily life requires reliance on local resources.

Spiritually, there is a strong need for Scripture in their language so that individuals and families can grow in their understanding of God's Word. Without it, spiritual growth depends heavily on external teaching.

There is also a need for trained local leaders who can faithfully teach the Bible and guide others in living out their faith. Strengthening the local church will be essential for lasting spiritual maturity.

Prayer Items
