Introduction / History

The Tuyukas call themselves Dokapuara which means the clay people. They live on the upper Tiquie River in Colombia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Tuyukas are excellent canoe makers, basket weavers, woodworkers and potters. They also produce hammocks and a special filter for fruit juice. They have a central long house (maloka) surrounded by individual houses, schools and medical clinics.

They get their food from slash-and-burn agriculture. Cassava is their staple crop. The Tuyukas also fish and hunt for their meat.

Though traditional religion is central to their worldview, almost half are also Christian, mainly Roman Catholic. There are also Evangelicals among them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tuyukas need a full harvest.
