Introduction / History

The Sukus live in Angola and further north in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Suku society is matrilineal, meaning the line of kinship is through the mother s side.

Men and women have different roles and daily tasks. Men are hunters. Sometimes they hunt in groups and other times they hunt individually. Their weapons for hunting include old rifles and bows and arrows. Women grow and harvest peanuts, yams, beans, peas and pineapples. They also collect roots, fruits and berries from the forest.

A very important ritual involves the initiation of boys to become men. Between ages 10-15 boys go to a special camp to be circumcised. After this ceremony, they are considered men.

Masks and wooden images are of great importance to the Suku people.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Suku believe in a creator god called ndzambyaphuungu. They have a diviner called a ngoombu who helps those who face sickness and other misfortunes. They are also marginally Roman Catholic.

What Are Their Needs?

The Suku need good medical care and schools. These are seldom available in rural Angola.

Prayer Points

Pray for every Suku family to have the chance to hear and respond to the Christian gospel.
Pray there will soon come a day when Suku disciples are discipling others.
Pray for Suku family leaders to have the spiritual hunger it takes to put all their faith in Jesus Christ.
