Introduction / History

The Korapun-Sela people live in the eastern highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia, primarily in Jayawijaya Regency near the upper reaches of the Erok River. They speak the Korupun-Sela language, part of the Trans–New Guinea family and are closely related to other Mek-speaking groups.

Historically, they have lived in isolated mountain valleys, practicing subsistence farming and maintaining strong clan-based social structures. Their culture reflects centuries of adaptation to rugged terrain, with traditions deeply tied to land and community.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life for the Korapun-Sela people is challenging and communal. They depend on slash-and-burn agriculture, growing sweet potatoes as a staple, along with taro and other root crops. Pigs are highly valued for food and social exchange, often used in ceremonies and as a measure of wealth. Homes are typically simple huts made from local materials, clustered in small villages. Due to their remote location, access to healthcare, education, and modern infrastructure is extremely limited. Roads are scarce, and most travel is by foot through mountainous terrain. Traditional dress and body decorations are still common during festivals, reflecting their rich cultural heritage.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The primary religion among the Korapun-Sela is ethnic traditional religion, which includes animistic practices and rituals to appease spirits believed to inhabit the land and nature. However, Christianity has made inroads. Many who claim Christianity mix it with traditional beliefs, and there is a great need for clear gospel teaching and discipleship.

What Are Their Needs?

Limited access to healthcare, clean water, and education. Malnutrition and preventable diseases are common due to isolation and lack of medical facilities.

Infrastructure is minimal, and economic opportunities are scarce. Literacy rates are low, and many remain outside the benefits of modern development.

Although some have heard of Christ, few understand the gospel clearly. There is a need for faithful workers to teach God's Word, encourage biblical living, and strengthen local believers.

Prayer Items

Pray for spiritual awakening among the Korapun-Sela, that those who identify as Christian will embrace a true, biblical faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray for protection and perseverance for any local believers, that they will stand firm and grow in grace.
Intercede for improved living conditions, including access to healthcare and education, as a testimony of God's love.
Pray for the breaking of spiritual strongholds, freeing them to worship the one true God.
