Introduction / History

They are one of six Tzeltal groups, divided by location, but all live in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. Chiapas is on the border with Guatemala.

What Are Their Lives Like?

There is so much poverty in the San Andres Larrainzar Tzeltal homeland that many are leaving to earn a living elsewhere. Their hometown is half indigenous and half Mestizo.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The San Andres Larrainzar Tzeltal are Christianized, but less than two percent Evangelical. Traditionally they have been Roman Catholic, but the Jehovah s Witnesses and Mormons are making inroads into their communities. There is a complete Bible in their language, but the Book of Mormon is being translated for them as well.

What Are Their Needs?

The San Andres Larrainzar Tzeltal people need to understand and embrace a Christ-centered theology. They need a higher literacy rate both in Spanish and their Tzotzil language.
