Introduction / History

The Rama are a tribe living on the southeast coast of Nicaragua. Most speak Spanish. The tribal elders are the only ones who speak their native language Rama.


Where Are they Located?

They live south of Bluefields, the capital of the South Caribbean Autonomous Region on the southeast coast of Nicaragua. Most live on the island of Rama Cay.


What Are Their Lives Like?

Farming and fishing is their main source of food. They live in hut-styled homes.


What Are Their Beliefs?

The majority are affiliated with the Moravian Church, though they may still largely follow traditional beliefs as well.
