Introduction / History

The Parecis, also known as the Haliti, are an Indigenous people of central?western Brazil, living primarily in the region of the Parecis Plateau in the state of Mato Grosso. They speak an Arawak?based language that remains an important marker of identity and a means of passing down history and social values. Their homeland is characterized by open savanna, rivers, and forest margins that have shaped settlement patterns and economic life.

Historically, the Parecis were known for their agricultural skill and extensive knowledge of the land. Over time, contact with Brazilian society brought significant changes through mission work, schooling, and integration into wider economic systems. While these encounters altered many aspects of life, the Parecis have continued to maintain a strong sense of identity rooted in community, language, and shared experience.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Parecis communities are organized around village life, where extended families form the heart of daily activity. Cooperation is central. Families work together in food production, childcare, and caring for elders. Agriculture plays a major role, with gardens producing staple crops that sustain households throughout the year. Fishing and occasional hunting supplement the diet and maintain ties to traditional skills.

Meals are often shared, reinforcing family unity and mutual responsibility. Teaching and learning take place informally through daily tasks, conversation, and observation. Elders are respected for their wisdom and experience, especially in matters related to land use, cultural practices, and community decision?making.

Community gatherings mark important moments such as weddings, funerals, and church celebrations. These events draw people together for shared meals, singing, prayer, and conversation, strengthening social bonds and reinforcing a shared sense of purpose. Daily rhythms are shaped by the land and seasons rather than rigid schedules.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the primary religious identity among the Parecis and provides the main framework through which many understand God, morality, and community life. Churches play a visible role, and Christian worship, prayer, and teaching are familiar parts of village life. The gospel has influenced how families approach marriage, conflict, and major life events.

As with many Indigenous Christian communities, elements of earlier worldview may still surface, particularly in how people think about illness or unexpected hardship. These residual influences reflect past belief systems rather than defining current faith. Overall, Christianity—not traditional religion—is the dominant and guiding spiritual identity of the Parecis people.

What Are Their Needs?

The Parecis face ongoing social challenges related to health, education, and economic pressure as they navigate life within a rapidly changing society. Outside influences can place strain on community life and on younger generations seeking to balance cultural identity with new expectations.

Spiritually, the Parecis church needs continued discipleship grounded in Scripture. Believers benefit from teaching that deepens understanding of the gospel and strengthens confidence in Christ. Developing local leaders who can faithfully teach God's Word and guide communities with wisdom is essential for long?term spiritual health. As faith matures, Parecis believers have the opportunity to contribute to God's mission beyond their own people.

Prayer Items

Pray for physical health and well?being for Parecis families and villages.
