Parecis in Brazil

Introduction / History

The Parecis, also known as the Haliti, are an Indigenous people of central?western Brazil, living primarily in the region of the Parecis Plateau in the state of Mato Grosso. They speak an Arawak?based language that remains an important marker of identity and a means of passing down history and social values. Their homeland is characterized by open savanna, rivers, and forest margins that have shaped settlement patterns and economic life.

Historically, the Parecis were known for their agricultural skill and extensive knowledge of the land. Over time, contact with Brazilian society brought significant changes through mission work, schooling, and integration into wider economic systems.
