Introduction / History

The Onondaga people are a Native American (indigenous) people of the Iroquoian family. Their primary language is Onondaga, which remains in use among a small number of speakers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many live near their ancestral lands and maintain strong ties to their heritage, culture, and community. Because of their small population, they experience challenges common to many indigenous groups, including preserving their language and traditional practices, sustaining cultural continuity, and balancing modern life with their traditional identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Onondaga identify as Christian, but only a few are classified as evangelical. In addition, a number still practice traditional religions rooted in ancestral spiritual traditions while some are non-religious.

What Are Their Needs?

The Onondaga people face several needs that affect both their spiritual and cultural life. With a small population and relatively few native speakers, there is a critical need to preserve the Onondaga language, traditions, and heritage so that future generations can carry them forward. They need to keep their identity as a people, but they also need an identity rooted in Christ.

Prayer Items

Pray for spiritual awakening, that Onondaga Christians might fervently share their faith with anyone who lacks the hope only Christ offers.
Pray for disciple-making; that they would plant reproducing churches.
Pray for mission workers or ministries that are sensitive to Onondaga culture, to engage lovingly, respectfully, and effectively.
