The Moskona people are an indigenous ethnic group living in Teluk Bintuni Regency, Papua Barat Province, Indonesia. They inhabit the southeastern Bird's Head region, including areas around Bituni Bay and the Sebjor River basin. The Moskona speak the Moskona language, which belongs to the East Bird's Head-Sentani language family and is considered endangered.
Historically, the Moskona have lived in forested areas, relying on natural resources for survival. Their identity is deeply tied to ancestral land, which they have struggled to protect from outside exploitation, including logging and palm oil plantations. The tribe consists of multiple clans and maintains strong cultural traditions rooted in communal life and respect for nature.
The Moskona live in small villages surrounded by dense forests. Their daily life revolves around subsistence farming, hunting, and gathering forest products such as sago, which is a staple food. Hunting wild pigs and fishing supplement their diet, along with root crops and fruits. Community life is built on the principle of gotong royong (mutual cooperation), where families and neighbors work together on major tasks like building homes or harvesting crops. When a house is constructed, men gather timber while women weave roofs from sago leaves and prepare food for workers. Celebrations often include communal feasts and traditional dances, reinforcing social bonds. Meals are simple and based on local resources, with rice, sago, and wild game being common. Sharing food and resources is a cultural norm, ensuring that vulnerable members such as widows and elders are cared for.
The Moskona people identify primarily as Christian, with both Protestant and Catholic traditions present. Christianity was introduced through missionary efforts, but traditional customs and animistic beliefs still influence aspects of life. While church attendance and Christian rituals are common, many communities blend biblical practices with cultural religious traditions. There is a need for deeper spiritual renewal and commitment to biblical faith, as syncretism and superficial understanding of Christianity remain challenges.
The Moskona face significant physical and spiritual challenges. Access to healthcare and education is limited due to their remote location, and infrastructure such as roads and clean water systems is underdeveloped. Economic opportunities are scarce, leaving most families dependent on subsistence farming and forest resources. Environmental degradation from logging and plantation development threatens their livelihoods and cultural heritage.
Spiritually, while Christianity is present, many believers lack strong discipleship and biblical teaching. There is a need for culturally relevant ministry that strengthens faith and equips local leaders to guide their communities.
